CleanMyDrive goes beyond being a simple cleaning app: it combines all the features Finder lacks in drive management. Helped by its nice design and clever user interface, the free app feels like native OS X, providing information about the available space on all mounted drives; users can also eject all drives with just one click.
After installation, CleanMyDrive takes its place in the Menu bar and pops up its sleek user interface showing all mounted drives, and even disk images. The app provides information about the storage capability of each drive, as well as monitoring free space and junk on each one of them. What we liked beyond the clean design and intuitive user interface was the capability to personalize the size of the external drives it ignores. If you choose None, no matter how small the external drive, it will appear in the CleanMyDrive list.
The app excels at detecting junk generated by Windows or Mac OS — files such as .DS_Store, Thumbs.db, etc. — and it also displays the amount of junk detected. Users can clean up with one click, and the trash is history in seconds, depending on its size. While in Finder you need to eject all the external drives and DMGs individually, CleanMyDrive allows you to eject them all with one click. Also, by choosing “Eject All,” the app not only ejects all the drives, but can also send the computer into sleep mode. Overall, we liked how the app performed: it cleaned the junk fast and was a helpful assistant to the native Finder app by providing useful information about the drives within an easy-to-understand user interface.
