“This is my second Synology. This replaced my four year old DS206. I am very satisfied.

However, I’d like to put the bad news first.

(1) Although I’m glad to report that Synology DS209 is at least twice as fast or as the DS206, it is still no contest to an internal hard drive. I did a simple test of transferring a file of 1G size. Between my 7200rpm internal hard drives, the transfer took just barely over 10 seconds; but the same file took almost 35 seconds to transfer from the Synology DS209 to another internal hard drive, and over 1.5 minutes transferring between different folders within Synology. So just be aware of this and put your expectation at the right place.

I actually hesitated between buying the Synology and building a real Windows server. Because I already have the Windows Server Operating system, I could probably build a solid Windows server at a comparable cost, and it would have much faster speed than Synology because it will have nearly the same speed as the internal drives on a gigabyte network. But at the end, I chose Synology because I felt that it was likely to be simpler. And it probably is, as I am not very familiar with Windows Server software and management.

That being said, I feel the Synology really is fast enough for its intended purpose. For accessing files and folders, you really don’t notice any difference between this network storage and an internal hard drive unless you routinely transfer very large files.

(2) Although the very basic setup of Synology DS209 is straightforward and simple, many advanced functions require a tech savvy person to dig out. The manufacturer default settings are extremely conservative with a majority of advanced functions turned off. Furthermore, for those functions that you could easily turn on, actually making it work is a challenge due to lack of detailed instructions. The case on point is the website hosting function (see below). It turned out this is one of the most exciting features of Synology, yet there is absolutely no adequate instructions for setting this up. It took hours of research, and trial and error for me to figure it out.

(3) I used to be plagued by a very annoying problem with Synology. It always asked me to enter a username and password to log back on when I accessed the Synology network drives after a while of not using it. A real network drive should not behave like this! I was hoping that the new Synology would somehow fix that problem. Well, it didn’t, but on the other hand, I finally figured out what was causing the problem. It turned out that when you set up users on Synology, you must set it exactly the same way as your Windows computer user setup, including both the username and the password, in order to avoid being required to log back on again and again. This may sound simple, but the truly confusing part is that on Windows your actual username is not necessarily the same as the “Account Name” you see on the windows. The username is set up when you first created the account. You can later change the “account name” to whatever you like, but the username will remain the original one. The account name change is just cosmetic. You will need to get really deep into the Windows operating system in order to change the username. The fact that you only see the “account name” but not the real username on the Windows will confuse you. And that’s what it did to me. I don’t know who is to blame for this issue, but I’m just glad that I finally got it right. It now seems to make an automatic connection every time when my desktop is started and will not ask for a logon again. I will come back to write a more detailed explanation later when I have time.

Now the good news.

(1) Most everything said by others about Synology is true. This thing works, very reliably. Tons of advanced functions. And you get extensive product support. The management software is generously upgradable on the old products. My four year old DS206 continued to receive benefits of software updates, and even firmware update. This is very generous of the company. They stand behind their products. There is also a very knowledgeable user community online.

(2) This can host up to 30 websites. I’m talking about real “your own domain” websites, not subdomain personal websites given to members. You will need either a static IP from your Internet service provider (expensive) or you will need to sign up for DDNS service to automatically track your dynamic IP (difficult to set up). If you have a fairly stable dynamic IP which very seldom changes, you might be able to manually track the IP, but that is painful and also renders the website unreliable.

The website hosted this way may not be fast enough for very busy commercial websites, but for relatively simple personal websites and company-front websites, this is more than good enough. In fact, because you don’t share an IP address with others (who knows who they are and what they are), you have a clean hosting. I used to run a website which always gets blocked in China. I later figured out that it was blocked because some other websites sharing the same IP address had content problems with the Chinese authorities. You may say that I should complain about the Chinese authorities, but for practicality, I’m just glad that I could now avoid that problem quite simply.

Being able to host websites is an exciting function. But the problem is in the setting up. It took me a long time to figure it out, even assuming a static IP (and it becomes even more difficult if you have a dynamic IP as most people probably do). The instructions are absolutely not clear. If you are not already experienced with these things, there’s little chance that you could make it work. I am very experienced, yet it took me hours of research and trial and error to figure it out. When I have time, I will provide some detailed instructions for doing this here. More later.”

“This device advertises being an iTunes server. It is not. What it does is allow visibility as a shared iTunes library which is quite far from being a true server. There is nothing whatsoever in any of the documentation that shows how to put music onto the device and that cannot be accomplished via the iTunes service. What has to be done is a file share must be set up and an iTunes installation on the network must redirect its library path to this file share. If the file share happens to be the same directory that is used by the device iTunes service, music can then be played from the device. Nowhere is any of that documented. Also, playlists cannot be created from this “server” (you cannot drag music from the share to a playlist on iTunes) even though “smart” playlists can be created on the device itself. This is not a true server in any form.”

“I setup the Synology DS209 for a real estate office with multiple tiers of authentication for multiple network folders. Having used Dlink NAS boxes in the past, this was a dream to setup in comparison. The AJAX menu system is easy to use and understand.

I set it up with two WD 500GB Black SATA drive mirrored. No issues with these drives, though the setup for the hard drives could have been a little clearer. As a tech by trade I tend to look for the “hard” way to do things. They may have just succeeded in making it very simple, which threw me slightly…

I did run into an issue that keeps me from giving this five stars. My client wanted to use the NAS for storing all the company data. However, Quickbooks 2006 fails to start, throwing a generic error message and then closing, when the company file is located on the NAS and then opened on an office computer. The same company file opened normally when copied from the NAS to the computer. I hit Google looking for a solution and found one post on a forum stating that they had experienced a similar issue and that a file system limitation on the Synology was to blame. They also stated that Quickbooks 2009 was successfully run from the Synology. I have not tested the Quickbooks 2009 or later solution myself. I emailed with Synology support about it and they said that the next firmware patch may offer a solution, but that patch wasn’t being released for some time (As of July, 2010). My solution was to run the company file locally.

“I spent weeks going over reviews for NAS devices. This unit (Synology DS209) and other synology units seemed to have really good reviews. I figured I couldn’t go wrong after seeing good reviews. I am very happy with my purchase to say the least. Not only did I get a storage device, but I got alot more. The photostation option is really nice for family members to see your photos over the internet. Filestation allows you to locally/remotely manipulate the stored files. Also, it has a DNLA music server for devices like PS3, networked AVR’s, ect. The features of this device are very nice considering the price.

I am no network technician but I was able to use just about every feature this device has to offer. For people with no knowledge of networking you will want someone to help you, this is no “magical” NAS device that does setup for you. The instructions are written for someone who has server/NAS experience so don’t expect a newbie to read the instructions and totaly figure this thing out.

This unit does have RAID capabilty when two SATA drives are installed. I initially installed one 1TB caviar black drive from WD. After setup and testing I purchased another 1TB drive to have mirroring capability. The drives are NOT hot swapable. The unit has to be shutdown and disassembled to get to drives. Not a big deal for a home user, but a small business may not want to shutdown server to replace a drive.

Over all I am very happy with my purchase. Synology makes a solid unit with feature-rich software that is easy to use. Bottom line – you will NOT be disappointed with this NAS.

8/24/10 Update: Synology has just released their DSM 3.0 for beta testing. I have had it for a week now and all seems well. I really like the android apps. The new interface is better as well.”

“I purchased Synology DS210j with two 1.5 TB WD hard drives. Everything has gone ultra smoothly. Now, I am not one of these people who starts unpacking everything, paper and packing materials flying, like Christmas. I read the setup instructions, review the online manual, and then get started, slowly and carefully.

Assembly was easy. Setup was easy; there was nothing mystifying. The device was on my network in no time, and seen by the other four machines on the net. My Mac found it right away when I opened Time Machine. On the Win 7 and Win XP machines, I use the Synology Data Replicator 3 (SDR3), which is bundled with the device.

If I have one tiny complaint, it’s that the SDR3 software does not seem to automatically create backup archives. I expected the backups to “pile up” and I would have to regularly delete old ones. But it just keeps the most current. No big deal; that’s fine. Maybe I have not figured out how to run the software properly.

I have staggered backups scheduled all night long (four computers) and when I check in the morning, everything is backed up and the device is idle. Glad I purchased it.”

“I don’t have that much experience with a NAS in the past but I always liked the idea of being able to access all my files from anywhere and feel safe about the security. Synology DS210j NAS allows you to set things up however you want it. You can encrypt certain folders within the NAS for additional protection. The audio station is great, you can stream music to any computer, anywhere you are. The server is pretty fast and runs smoothly. I’ve had it lock up twice in the past 2 months and I restarted it, but I may have just been impatient.

I’m running the DSM 3.0 software which is still in Beta, however the best part of the new DSM is the photostation app. In fact the best thing so far is the two apps, (iphone and android) that are compatible with the Diskstation. It allows you to listen to any song you have or look at any picture you have at your fingertips. And up to this point I have not seen any delay. I have yet to try to stream a movie with the DS Photostation, but I think it should work. As a media server it works great too with my PS3, no hangups so far streaming MP3s, MP4s or avi’s I have not tried any Divx.

The only problem I have had to date is the blog site that’s built in. If you don’t have the margins set correctly it will not post your entry, it just erases the whole entry as if it was never written. I don’t really care because I’m not a blogger and there are so many free blog sites, but as a beta tester for the DSM 3.0 software, I’ve been trying out all of the applications.

I can tell you that it works seamlessly with both PC and Apple computers. In fact the iTunes media server works great with Apple, I can’t currently get it to work on my PC, but I’m sure I can if I get the settings right. I’m going to try to utilize ISCSI target in the next week, if that works then I’m super impressed, because then this little Synology DS210j Disk Station NAS will be up there with the big boys at a fraction of the price.

Synology DS210j really made a great product for ~$200, I think I convinced a few of my friends to pick one up themselves after seeing all the things it can do. For the others, I can just carve them out a space on my server to use since this will hold up to 4 TB of storage, plus you can daisy chain even more drives to the USB or eSATA ports – amazing. I recommend keeping it wired for speed, but the site says you can also use some wireless dongles. I have a Belkin N+ with a gigaport switch (setting up the router was probably a biggest problem, but eventually got the firewall setting correct)

On final tip, once you get it set up, sign up for a dynamic DNS at DynDNS or NO-IP, they both give you 2 free hostnames so that you or your friends don’t need to type in the IP address everytime and if you have a dynamic IP address, the service checks every morning and updates it. The Synology user guide explains it a bit and also recommends it.”
