This handbook by Smid on the subject of CNC programming tackles the subject from a different angle than his bestselling “CNC Programming Handbook”. That book is a more basic one aimed at beginners. This book is more advanced and contains several programming subjects that are very difficult to find either in other books or on the web. Even where there is overlap with the author’s “CNC Programming Guide”, this book provides much more depth of coverage on various subjects than that book does. As is standard with this author, this book includes many clear detailed drawings that greatly assist in visualizing the procedures covered. Whenever applicable, a complete programming example is provided. Equations and all tools used in each example are boxed and clearly labeled. As always, this author’s instructions and explanations are clear and detailed.

I am currently working as a CAD/CAM designer but no idea how to go about becoming a machinist or CNC operator. Is it hard to operate CNC machine or milling equipment to be able to achieve my goal?
Any help is appreciated. I am looking to gain experience and knowledge to further my goal. Equipment wise, what is good to start off? I am looking to milling equipment then eventually when parts need be machine accurate, I’ll move on to CNC.

Job description for CNC Machine Operator: Responsibility of a CNC programmer is to write computer program or software which contain commands for the machine to run. The CNC machine will follow what has been instructed in the software so they can function correctly. Now come the part for CNC machine operator who take over the machine and prepare it as well as perform necessary task. They download and install the software, fix the needed tools as well as metal (or plastic in other case) that is to be shaped into the equipment so they can perform a test run.
If a CNC machine operator detect any errors or problem with the equipment then he needs to fix it and modify anything necessary in order for the machine to run properly. The CNC machine operator will then run the required amount of product.
As a CNC machine operator he will continue to look after the equipment for any problems that might occur. Too much vibration in the cutting tools is among the problem which can be detected by hearing. This problem diminishes quality of the product. The plastic or metal, known as workpiece, is needed be checked if it cooled or lubricated adequately. One CNC machine operator may need to watch over several machines.
